What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts at night, often due to airway obstruction. It disrupts restful sleep and can lead to serious health issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, fatigue, and poor concentration.

Left untreated, sleep apnea can significantly affect quality of life and increase the risk of long-term health complications.

Process of Sleep Apnea Treatment

Sleep apnea treatment consists of the following steps:

  • Initial consultation to discuss your symptoms and your medical history
  •  A sleep study referral to get more data
  • A treatment plan to determine which oral appliance or other recommendations will work best to open your airways more when you are sleeping
  • Follow-up appointments to check on progress and make any adjustments

FAQ

  • What are signs of sleep apnea?

Common signs of sleep apnea include snoring, gasping for air, morning headaches, daytime fatigue and other health ailments that are related to oxygen being restricted during sleep.

  • What's the difference between a CPAP and an oral appliance?

A CPAP machine pumps air through a mask to force your airways open at night. It’s very effective, but can be invasive to sleep with its tubes, straps, and air pressure components.

An oral appliance is a custom-fit mouthpiece that gently shifts your jaw forward to keep your airway from collapsing while you sleep. They are small and portable.

  • How do I get diagnosed for sleep apnea?

There are a couple of ways to diagnose sleep apnea:

    • In-lab sleep studies, where you sleep overnight at a clinic so your breathing and heart rate can be monitored
    • At-home sleep test where you wear a device at home that tracks your breathing and oxygen levels
