Process of Pediatric Dental Care

Inspection and assessment: We begin the dental exam process by thoroughly inspecting the teeth and gums. The doctor will use a dental mirror to look closely at each individual tooth and gum line, checking for any cracks, chips, cavities, or other signs of damage. A dental pick will be used to gently probe around the teeth and gums to look for any signs of decay or infection.

X-rays:  X-rays will be taken if necessary to better examine the underlying teeth and bone structure.

Teeth Cleaning: We will use a variety of instruments to clean around and between the teeth, removing any food particles or plaque that may be present. We will also use a high-powered polishing tool to help remove any surface stains and make the teeth look whiter and brighter.

Fluoride or Sealants: We will recommend fluoride or sealants if necessary to prevent tooth decay, which is fairly common in children and pediatric patients.

Next Steps

Dental Consultation: At the end of your visit, we will discuss the overall health of your child’s teeth and gums and explain any recommended treatments or changes that should be made to help maintain good dental health. We may also give recommendations for home care, such as brushing and flossing, and the need for additional treatments, such as fluoride treatments or sealants.

Dental Recommendations: We will provide recommendations for dental care products and answer any questions you may have about your visit in relation to your child’s dental health, payment, or next steps.

Next Dental Checkup Visit: Our front office staff will work with you to schedule your child’s next dental checkup, typically six months out. A cadence of receiving a dental checkup twice a year aligns with best practice for your child’s dental health.

FAQ

  • How does pediatric dentistry differ from adult dentistry?

Although the treatments are often the same, pediatric dentistry involves a different approach to care. We feel it’s important to make the experience fun and inviting for the child. We strive to create the most calming and welcoming environment possible, so kids grow up liking the dentist.

  • When should my child have their first dental visit?

A good rule of thumb is to take your child to the dentist by their first birthday or six months after their first tooth comes in, whichever comes first. The dentist can also educate you about thumb-sucking, pacifiers, and teething issues early on so you are prepared for those dental stages.

  • Are X-rays safe for children?

Yes, dental X-rays are safe for children. We use low-radiation and use precautions to keep exposure very minimal.
