High-Quality Dental Inlays and Onlays in Herndon, VA

Inlays and onlays are often referred to as indirect fillings. They are strong, very durable, and have a natural look, so they are minimally invasive to your appearance. They are often easier to fit than a crown, which is why, in some cases, they are a better option.

Inlays and onlays are bonded directly into the tooth—making it 3/4 stronger than previously.

Inlays are just that. They are inserted into the center of the tooth, where onlays cover the entire chewing surface of the tooth. Inlays can be used over multiple teeth.

Dental inlays and onlays can last up to 30 years if cared for properly.

What is the Process?

First Visit – Exam and Preparation: We will begin by examining the affected tooth and removing any decay or old filling material. Once the tooth is clean, we will shape the area to prepare for your custom restoration. Impressions are then taken of your tooth and sent to a dental lab where your inlay or onlay will be made. A temporary filling may be placed to protect your tooth in the meantime.

Second Visit – Placement and Bonding: When your permanent inlay or onlay is ready (usually about one to two weeks later), you’ll return for placement. The restoration is carefully fitted, adjusted for bite alignment, and then bonded securely to the tooth using a strong dental adhesive. The area is polished for a smooth, natural finish.

What are the next steps?

Post-Treatment Care: After placement, your tooth will look and feel natural, and you can resume normal eating once the anesthesia wears off. Good oral hygiene and regular checkups help ensure your inlay or onlay lasts for years.

FAQ

  • What’s the difference between an inlay and an onlay?

Inlays fit within the tooth’s surface; onlays extend to cover one or more cusps for added protection and strength.

  • Are inlays and onlays better than fillings?

They’re stronger, longer-lasting, and better suited for restoring larger areas of decay without compromising the tooth’s integrity.

  • Do inlays and onlays look natural?

Yes. They’re custom-matched to your natural tooth color and shaped for a flawless appearance.
