Dental Crowns and Bridges

Dental crowns enhance the health, function, and appearance of your smile. If you have weak, damaged, or broken teeth, a dental crown is used to repair the tooth and restore optimal function. In turn, a dental bridge closes the gap left behind by one or more missing teeth. Typically a dental bridge is supported by adjacent teeth and instead of "crowning" the tooth, it "bridges" the tooth to another tooth.

Dental crowns and bridges both require several appointments to ensure they are fitted and formed correctly. We partner with a lab to form the crown or bridge once impressions are secure.

    Pain Level

The pain level with dental crowns is minimal, mostly due to the small amount of pressure with securing the crown over the tooth. Dental bridge procedures can involve sedation during the procedure, and soreness post-procedure may be expected.

Dental Crowns and Bridges: An Overiew

A dental crown aims to protect and reinforce a badly damaged tooth and can be used to address multiple types of general, restorative, and cosmetic dental concerns. For instance, a crown can be used to:

  • Stabilize a tooth after a root canal
  • Act as a prosthetic tooth for a dental implant
  • To support a dental bridge
  • To prevent further damage to a weak or decayed tooth
  • To restore a broken or fractured tooth

Dental bridges are used to replace one or several consecutive teeth, restoring full function and beauty to your smile. A dental bridge closes the gap left behind by one or more missing teeth. Typically, a dental bridge is supported by adjacent teeth, but for a more stable solution, patients can also have an implant-supported bridge. A dental bridge secured by dental implants can provide several long-term benefits, including:

  • A long-lasting, stable solution for tooth loss: An implant-secured restoration offers added comfort, stability, and function to your smile
  • Reduce bone loss in the jaw: Dental implants can help stimulate the jaw bone, encouraging bone growth and repairing bone density loss
  • Cost and time-effective solution for tooth loss: Finding a permanent solution for your tooth loss can save you time and money in the long run

For chipped teeth and as an alternative to dental crowns in some cases, we also offer Bioclear—a modern, minimally invasive dental technique that uses clear matrices and composite materials to close gaps, correct tooth shape, and improve aesthetics. It provides long-lasting, natural-looking results without removing healthy tooth structure.

We will evaluate the condition of your teeth, gums, and jaw to determine if you are an ideal candidate for a dental crown, dental bridge, an implant-secured dental bridge, or Bioclear. 01.

The Process

Dental crowns require at least two visits to our Herndon, VA dentist office. During your first visit, we will prepare the tooth and take impressions. The impressions are sent to a dental lab to fabricate your custom dental crown.

We will place a temporary crown while you wait for your dental crown to protect your tooth and restore normal chewing function.

At your next visit, the temporary crown will be removed, and your permanent crown will be permanently bonded to your teeth. If necessary, we will make any adjustments to your tooth to ensure a comfortable bite and a beautiful, natural-looking result.

Dental bridges require two to three visits to our Herndon office, depending on whether it is to be secured using your adjacent natural teeth or dental implants. If your dental bridge is secured using the adjacent teeth, we will recommend placing a dental crown for strength.

If dental implants are used to support your dental bridge, we will work with a local oral surgeon for the surgical phase of your implant process.

Once the implants are placed, they are allowed three to six months to heal and fully fuse with the jawbone. During the healing phase, we will place a temporary bridge for added comfort and function.

After the implants have healed, we will take impressions of your teeth and send them to a dental lab to fabricate your dental bridge.

During your final appointment, we will carefully secure your dental bridge to your implants or your adjacent teeth.

Next Steps

With all dental crown and dental bridge procedures, you should maintain a proper oral hygiene routine and schedule regular visits to our dentist office to ensure your smile stays in optimal condition.

Following treatment:

  • Be gentle with your mouth. Avoid chewy, sticky, or super crunchy foods during recovery or when you have a temporary crown placed.
  • Following the procedure, you may experience sensitivity to hot or cold. This is normal and should go away after a while.
  • Brush, floss, and rinse as usual to ensure you keep the crown or bridge clean.
  • If your bite feels off after a week or two, let us know and we will adjust as needed.
  • Stay current on your dental checkups.

FAQ

  • Who should consider a dental crown?

Patients may need a dental crown for a variety of reasons. Crowns can address multiple types of general, restorative, and cosmetic dental concerns.

A crown aims to protect and reinforce a badly damaged tooth. For instance, a crown can be used to:

    • Stabilize a tooth after a root canal
    • Act as a prosthetic tooth for a dental implant
    • To support a dental bridge
    • To prevent further damage to a weak or decayed tooth
    • To restore a broken or fractured tooth
  • What are dental crowns made of?

Traditionally, crowns were made of gold or metal, but today’s crowns are typically made of dental porcelain. Dental porcelain comes in a wide range of shades and resembles the tooth enamel, making it the ideal material to restore your smile. With porcelain crowns, only you and your dentist will know it’s a crown.

  • What is a dental bridge?

Unlike a dental crown that helps restore strength to a compromised tooth, a dental bridge provides reinforcement where a tooth is missing or has a gap between teeth.

Missing teeth affect your appearance, but they can also affect the way you bite, chew, speak, and the health of your remaining teeth. Dental bridges can replace one or several consecutive teeth, restoring full function.

  • Do you offer any alternatives to dental crowns?

In some cases, we may recommend Bioclear for closing gaps, repairing chipped teeth, and improving tooth shape. Bioclear provides natural aesthetics, preserves tooth structure, and delivers long-lasting, beautiful results.
