Process of a Dental Checkup

Inspection and Assessment: We begin the dental exam process by thoroughly inspecting the teeth and gums. You dentist will use a dental mirror to look closely at each individual tooth and gum line, checking for any cracks, chips, cavities, or other signs of damage. A dental pick will be used to gently probe around the teeth and gums to look for any signs of decay or infection.

X-rays:  X-rays will be taken if necessary to better look at the underlying teeth and bone structure.

Teeth Cleaning: We will use a variety of instruments to clean around and between the teeth, removing any food particles or plaque that may be present. We will also use a high-powered polishing tool to help remove any surface stains and make the teeth look whiter and brighter.

Flouride or Sealants: We will recommend flouride or sealants if necessary to prevent tooth decay. This is fairly common with children and pediatric patients.

Next Steps

Dental Consultation: At the end of your visit, we will discuss the overall health of your teeth and gums and explain any recommended treatments or changes that should be made to help maintain good dental health. We may also give recommendations for home care, such as brushing and flossing, and the need for additional treatments, such as fluoride treatments or sealants.

Dental Recommendations: We will recommend dental care products and answer any questions you may have about your visit, including about your dental health, payment, or the next steps.

Next Dental Checkup Visit: Our front office staff will work with you to schedule your next dental checkup, typically 6 months out. Receiving a dental checkup twice a year aligns with best practice for your dental health.

  • How often should I floss to maintain dental health?

You should floss twice a day. But, ideally, there is no  “perfect” time—morning or night is fine, as long as you’re consistent. Many people prefer flossing at night to avoid sleeping with food debris in their mouth, while others floss after every meal. Ultimately, you can’t floss too much.

  • Where can I find a list of recommended dental products?
