Protecting Your Smile From Nighttime Teeth Grinding

Could You Be Grinding Your Teeth Without Knowing It?

When most people think about teeth grinding, they assume they would know if they were doing it. Surprisingly, that’s often not the case. Very few patients come into the dental office saying, “I think I’m grinding my teeth.” Instead, they mention symptoms that don’t seem connected at first.

You might wake up with a sore or tired jaw. You may notice that your front teeth are starting to chip. Perhaps you’ve had a filling or crown replaced, only to have it come loose again. These seemingly unrelated issues can all be signs of nighttime teeth grinding or clenching, also known as bruxism.

Because grinding usually happens while you’re asleep, many people have no idea it’s happening until the damage becomes noticeable.

Dentists Often Spot the Warning Signs Early

One of the biggest reasons a night guard is recommended is that we can often detect the effects of grinding years before you realize there’s a problem.

During a routine exam, our team may notice tiny, smooth, flat areas on your back teeth called wear facets. These spots develop when teeth repeatedly rub against each other over time. They are often one of the earliest signs of nighttime grinding.

The challenge is that these early changes usually don’t hurt and are difficult to see on your own. As a result, most people don’t recognize the problem until more significant damage has already occurred.

Why Teeth Begin Chipping and Wearing Away

By the time front teeth begin chipping, teeth appear noticeably worn, or dental work starts failing, nighttime grinding has often been happening for years.

Your tooth enamel is the hardest substance in your body. Under normal chewing forces, healthy enamel does not wear into flat surfaces. However, the repeated pressure from clenching and grinding places much greater stress on your teeth than they were designed to handle.

As the enamel gradually wears away, it exposes the softer yellow layer beneath it, called dentin. Unlike enamel, dentin wears down much more quickly, allowing damage to progress faster. Once this process begins, teeth can become more vulnerable to chipping, fracturing, sensitivity, and further wear.

Grinding can also put extra strain on fillings, crowns, and other dental restorations, causing them to loosen or break sooner than expected.

How a Night Guard Helps Protect Your Smile

A custom night guard is designed to create a protective barrier between your upper and lower teeth while you sleep. Although it may not stop the grinding itself, it helps absorb and distribute the forces that would otherwise be placed directly on your teeth.

This protection can help reduce unnecessary wear, lower the risk of chipped teeth, and help preserve fillings, crowns, and other dental work. Many patients also notice less jaw soreness or muscle fatigue when they wear their night guard consistently.

Starting treatment early can help prevent small problems from becoming much larger and more expensive ones.

Don’t Ignore the Early Signs

The good news is that nighttime grinding can often be identified before serious damage occurs. Regular dental checkups allow us to detect early warning signs and recommend treatment to help protect your long-term oral health.

Have you noticed chipped or worn front teeth, morning jaw soreness, or a filling that won’t stay in? If so, talk with our team. A simple evaluation can determine whether nighttime grinding may be the cause—and whether a custom night guard is the right solution to help protect your smile for years to come.
